Diamonds

a poem by Zahira Rahman

Of things rare and scarce,
stone buried for million years
darkness swathed in light,
coal black-
then disguise unveiled to reveal blinding white.

Diamonds
of stone, of people, of deeds, of moments,
a child, a smile, a hand offered in love,
laughter of the wrinkled face,
pure air, crystal clearness of water,
all diamonds, glitter of life.

A diamond is
someone lifted by life’s agony;
by noble design-free thoughts.
The black of great piety
transformed into the white of pure passion.

Diamonds-
Symbols of the patient grace of some black embers
A dying bark, reaching out for eternal brightness.
