I am free
at twelve in the night
after cleaning the room,
having my dinner
of four stale idlis,
to play with my friends
and sleep till fourv
in the morning.

I am ten years old.
I work hard, cleaning tables
washing dishes,
and enjoy watching customers
having idli, vada or milkshake.
At times I am scolded
for I start playing
with the glasses and spoons
or, with my friends
who too work with me.

With no parents, or leaders
to guide or misguide me
I am all alone
to be lost in this little world
of kitchen, tables and chairs.
But I am happy
for I get my food
and a place to sleep
without begging
and I enjoy life.
