The First Step

a poem by Suman Dodril

One small step for man,
a giant leap for mankind:

What about an young child,
which cannot have pride:

In showing it can walk,
neither can it talk:

Crawling on all four,
it becomes so so bore:

What makes man different
to which are apes indifferent:

Just to stand straight,
and watch the sun rise bright:

That’s where we have to hedge,
to try to look over the edge:

It’s a baby’s first step,
it’s really the first step:

In a world so new,
which they know so few:

It’s a mother’s delight,
to see her son stand upright:

She now feels so secure,
though it might be a little obscure:

An act of absolute imbalance,
in life to get some balance:

It’s a baby’s first step,
of course, it’s a giant leap.
