We the people darker than white
We the people who have no right
We the people lighter than black
We on whom Africa turns her back
Be we in or be we out
What is this rebirth all about?
A vision of clarity seen by the wise
The foolish prostitute, pilfer, jeopardize
Can colour determine who I be?
Subtly imprisoned saying we’re free
Weakened minds the invisible prison
Perpetual victims of a colour prism
Chains chains shackles and lock
Our togetherness do we block
Africa, mute mother, hear our pain
Never the colour prison again.
What is our fate?
Neither black nor white
Engaged in an insidious weaponless fight
Why be we victims of capricious fate
Offspring of Africa, Children of hate
Talks of ubuntu Do you mean me?
The door’s been closed I have no key
All are invited, all are inside
On the outside hateful diatribe
Feast for the tribal, eat well I say
But what of us hungered, starved all day
Africa, Africa are we your sons?
Denied by your offspring giving us none.
In rich genealogy where is my name?
Again you play the colour game
In tribal events how do I fit?
In places of honour where do I sit?
Our mothers, be they daughters of king
Never their praises do you sing
Were they not worthy, worthy of mention?
Omitted I say with dubious intention
What the intention? I’m not sure
Mayhap keeping bloodline pure.
Different options opening to me
To rightfully claim my identity
Which one, which one do I take?
War or peace for Africa’s sake
Gun or olive, dove or hawk
My path, my path alone must I walk
In righteous anger a fist I raise
Crucify you with my furious gaze
Exploding violence compels my hand
On righteous ground make a stand
Beware, beware time comes to me
Bringing dark, bloody prophecy
History re-written in oceans of tears
Till injustice against me disappears
So spoke the oracle, so spoke the sage
bitter sons of Africa are coming of age
Forgotten people darker than white
People demanding, claiming our right
We the people lighter than black
To Africa, Africa we must come back
To Africa, Africa we will come back
To Africa, Africa we will come back.
