The Lessons of Life

a poem by Deepti Chhabra

It was a lonely night,
I stood on the cliff and cried…

The waves hit me on my face,
I was left alone, thinking in gaze!

I shivered with fear, quivered with pain.
My good times were in drain…

In distress- I cursed my destiny in vain.
Cursed myself ‘n all happy men…

Why only me? I wondered.
Tears rolled down ‘n I shivered in thunder…

The cyclone had snatched all I had.
A few earthen pots was all that was left…
My house and family were swept…

I had lost all hope with life,
When there was a lightning in the sky…

I felt a soft touch on my shoulder.
I looked behind to find a stranger…

“Hey! This is life”, he said…
He held my hand ‘n pointed to the sky…
“God is watching us from that high…
Now it’s night soon it’ll be day.”
With eyes full of hope,
He taught me that day…

“I am a lonely wanderer like you,
Was born unloved and grew up too…

I despair not as God- is with me.
He’s taking my test- I know it best…
I’ll surely fair well if I try my best”…

Wiping my tears, he smiled at me.
Feelings of hope surged within me…

I threw my despondent thoughts and smiled at him.
“Will you be my friend?” I asked him.

He held me tight ‘n pointed to eastern sky.
Together we shall walk on the path of life…

He promised me and so did I.
I had learnt the lesson of life…
I had learnt the lesson of life…
