Words

a poem by Aswini Mishra

Words have more power than you would believe,
They can bring joy, they can bring grief.
The things you say can’t be taken back,
Like the bullet from a gun or shell from a tank.

So you better watch what you say,
Or the consequences may be grave.
My talent with words is not just a skill,
It’s my power, my power to kill.

I can always use these words to curse,
But that’s not the purpose of my verse.
I’m here not to destroy but to create,
I’m here to talk of love, not of hate.

Ever since I was a little kid,
I had to put up with a lot of shit.
People told me I had an attitude,
My publisher told me I was too crude.

God knows how many times I cried,
Because somebody said something to hurt my pride.
I had nobody to turn to,
And if you can relate, this rhyme’s for you.

The words that hit me pierced my chest,
I had to go through hell everytime I gave a test.
But now I’m using these words to speak,
And I’ll continue as long as I breathe.
