The Surgery

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

There were several shades of darkness
the distant murmur of voices held no interest
as I journeyed through a night
that is just below the surface of light.
Darkness became a flying carpet
taking me to a place yet unknown,
but just as unconsciousness were ready to eat my memory
of ever having lived
I was torn away from this easy softness,
hurled back onto the shore of life, light and pain.
