The Knife Man

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

The man outside the dive in
one of Port of Spain’s side streets
sat stabbing himself in the leg with a flick knife,
drew no blood
since his leg was made of wood,
yet made holes in his jeans.

Bought him a beer
he smiled and stuck the knife deep into his leg,
while drinking his ale
only it was the wrong leg
and he drew lots of blood
and derisive laughter from the drunks in the bar.
