A Lost Pet

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

My pet giraffe has disappeared, he’s got
soft brown eyes, but you’ll need a ladder
to have a closer look. He answers to
the name of Fido and is usually followed
by a pack of randy dogs they think he’s
walking lampposts.

I’m also worried that women will react
hysterically if he peers into their bedroom window
on the second floor and car drivers
who turn their heads not believing what they see!
Prang! Head and taillights meet in a
crushing symphony; my pet gets the blame.

If he doesn’t stand still he shouldn’t
be hard to find I can’t go looking cause’
I’ve a pregnant anaconda, Elisa in my bed,
and have to catch rats in the cellar for her dinner;
not to forget Bellamy the rhino,
who’s on the balcony suffering the runs.
