In the half-light of morning I saw
an elephant on the balcony flapping
its huge ears awoke and told you
“The balcony is too narrow for an elephant”
You insisted “well, it’s a small one.”
You ignored my fine reasoning and said
“What are you doing up so early?
It’s Sunday?
Come back to bed.”
Before falling asleep I could hear rain,
a drizzle that lacked emotion,
and thought of the poor animal
stuck on a balcony
when it should be walking the savannah
scaring the shit out of lions.
