Peace in Our Lifetime

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

No one wins a war, except military officers
Who get promoted for valour and leadership.
Gold star, medals and splendid epaulettes.

Not the men on the battlefield, most who did
Want to be there in the first place, except a few
Who thought that war was a great adventure, till
Their friends were blown up and died in agony.

Some even lose their humanity and
Massacre civilians.
We shall remember them. You will not!
Names carved in stones are forgotten.
While books and movies eulogising wars are fondly remembered.
To die for a piece of someone’s real estate, is considered bravery.
Fatherland and all that shit.

Poverty and wars will always be amongst us,
But it’s our human duty, to try, eradicating both.
