A galley boy went ashore in
Liverpool and in a shop window
Saw saxophone.
How he longed for that instrument
And it wanted him to buy it,
Of that he was sure.
It’s euphony echoed through
His mind, he couldn’t think of
Anything else.
Asked the skipper for a small
Advance, who laughed and
Told him to go help the cook.
Went to a jazz club, they wouldn’t
Let him in, stood outside and heard
Someone, playing his saxophone.
Youthful tears, it could have
Changed his life; now, he’s a lonely
Man who cries in his pint of bitter.
