Growing up and letting go

a poem by Pooja Amin

There were times when we laughed and times when we cried.
Yet we stuck together and held each other’s hands tight, even though we had fights.
The year started off, yet we never knew that it would fly by so fast,
and when we look back, we see our past.
Remember those times when we were just kids, playing,
falling and getting hurt, each time we slid.
Today we get card pulls for things we are not supposed to do;
like talking without permission, and not doing our homework too.
Now we look into each other and see a special bond,
and hope that it lives in our hearts and is never gone.
We admire the person for his/her special trait, and see them through the eyes of respect;
for we don’t know if we will ever be able to meet someone like them or what to expect.
We remember those funny little comments that someone had passed,
and in these few days left for us,
we might as well hear the ones that are last.
Soon, we will be gone on our separate ways,
so enjoy and make memorable your last few days.
These special times don’t last very long,
and when we don’t cherish them, we sing a sad song.
Growing up and letting go are the hardest things in life,
but now it is time to look into the future and make one that is bright.
