The herd, unheard

a poem by Tanushree Nair

A delicacy,
Adorned in a crimson tinge
on a silver tray
conceals a hideous slaughter
Sliced in suavity
muting the cries of agony.

Vanity flaunts
its exuberant fur
Snatched from the
hapless winter-loved
Strewn, ruthless cold.

An emblem of status
displayed in
Souvenirs and encased ivory-
The hides of a bloody in-story.

Passion
pulls the trigger
A wail dies out in the ether
Yet the spirit lingers
For the protector
To rise from the
Slain
Pomposity and lust
Of a predator
