Contrast

a poem by Urmila Mahajan

Quiet tranquillity fills my heart,
Though the air is pierced with frenzied shouts.

An early stroll leaves me clean and whole,
Though the dusty wind blows leaves about.

Hear the lusty squeals of a newborn babe,
Watch the sombre hearse bring the body out.

Observe how the din of tumultuous day
Is hushed and mute when the moon comes out.

The contrasting faces of Nature
Taught me what balance is all about.

That the end is a foreseen part of the beginning
And for peace a war must be fought.

So the flame that leaps into life at birth
Must be stilled when the oil runs out.
