A Tale of Money

a poem by Mahendra

Come children dear, may you all hear,
Grandmama’s Tale-
This is the story, of a Golden Fairy
Who lived in the Land where the cloud-ships sail;
A crown of gold her head adorned,
Of Silver Moonlight her cloak she donned,
The myriad arts of Magic she held,
Most Enchanting Music her laughter spelled!

One day this Fairy, she glanced at the Earth below:
Saw the blue seas, and the green trees and the sparkling snow,
All Creatures alive-winged, shelled, striped, spotted,
Flying, crawling, hopping, smooth and knotted-
Saw the Golden Sun shed his yellow light,
Saw the soft Night sing to her star-babies bright,
In Silent Symphony…
And she wondered at Earth’s Symmetry!

Then this Maiden, of a sudden, a Creature strange she saw…
He lived in caves, he spoke to the waves
He hunted his food and ate it raw!!!
He was the Monarch of the Earth-Empire,
Brave and Bold, his strength did hold
The power to command Water and Fire!!!
But Alas- He knew not Emotion, knew not the Truth
Of Old Age’s Wisdom, of the wonders of Youth.

Then this Fairy Maiden, with Wisdom laden
Slowly did creep, while he was asleep
Into his Mind-Chamber deep…
From there took form in his hands,
Spread Far & Wide, all Nations, all Lands:
She taught him to toil, at Water & Soil
Taught him the joys of Giving, and Honest Living
And the skill to rule Pound & Penny!

She taught many a Judas , the Price of Treachery;
And well learnt many a Midas, the Golden lessons of Paternity!!
Poet and Preacher, Sage and Teacher- all her lessons went through,
Impartial Teacher, she taught Kings, and beggars too!!
Gentle as a Dove, like an Eagle strong,
She held hands with the Right, and reprimanded the Wrong!
For haven’t we heard of Thieves’ Treasures
Being given to rightful others??

But Alas!!! Many forgot, the lessons taught,
And slaves to Greed became:
Of Evil drank, in Hatred sank,
And brought bitter Shame, to Humanity’s name!!
Then this Fairy, vowed to wait, till Mighty Fate
Would set things right again-
If Adam’s heir would know, how to grow
In Goodness and Greatness, Peace and Love
Be strong as an Eagle, yet gentle as the Dove
Pure in Thought, True in Deed
Banish Evil, exile Greed-
Then this Fairy Belle, shall leave to dwell,
In her Land where the cloud-ships sail…

So children dear, may you all hear,
The Moral of this Tale:
This lovely Maiden, whose name is “Money”
She’s waiting for you to learn a lesson too many!
No matter what you earn, no matter what you spend,
But a big School, is this Earth: Upon this, know well your Worth,
Your lessons well if you learn, to your side shall all Wealth turn;
And next time when a coin you see-
Look carefully, there’s a lesson for thee!!!
