Success – for some

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Hire and fire on the carousel of work,
when it reaches the top
you might get a glimpse of the view,
when it stops
and you fall off
it’s your own fault
for not having a harness
and wanting too much money for your work.

“Have a Nice Day”,
disregard old friends on the ladder of success
and when you reach the top
tell them smugly that the view is fine
but money really doesn’t matter.

Come, come, join the big wheel of the global economy,
cheap oil and four-wheel drive,
where the victims are lazy,
work-shy losers who only have got themselves to blame!;
and anyway they don’t live in your leafy lane.
