The Accident

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

The traffic in front, slowed down,
So did I, but not the car behind me.
Watched the crash in slow motion
Like it had nothing to do with me.
Police, the driver full of contrition
Admitted his fault, which he later
Retracted when faced with heavy
Bills. Insurance companies refused to
Pay, nothing new here, they are an
Reflection of the society we live in
Which ground pillars are lies, deceit
And greed, so I joined the dance.
Back pain, due to the accident,
Doctors note, two weeks off work.
After a long squabble, a winner and
A loser! Dishonesty pays, I was paid
More than I deserved; and thus it
Creaks on. Shake hands it’s only
Business as usual.
