Eva and the Beast

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

When nude Eva dipped her fair body in the Crystal Lake,
birds stopped singing
and all the forest’s animal came
sat by the lake’s bank
and in awe watched Eva bath
and scented silence filled the air.

Then evil struck in the form of a sleek crocodile
which didn’t know the difference
between a body beautiful
and a peace of succulent flesh.
Crimson the sea, fish died
and the forest lost its eye.
