Fashion

a poem by Kamar Sultana Sheik

I wonder how often, the fair Gulls lining the beach-
Go in for a bleach?
So splendid the mighty elephant make,
How often a polish, his tuskers take?

Lustrous as the velvet-black night, they shine-
What kohl does the sparrow’s eyes’ line?
His wing, with Rainbow hue to dye
Where did the Kingfisher, his cosmetic buy?

Where designed the Peacock his plume,
The Wild Mare, her Ponytail, where did she groom?
Where bought the Jasmine her perfume sweet,
Where pedicured the Cat, her soft-pawed feet?

Where learnt the deer, her posture of silent grace-
How practiced the King of Beasts, that August look on his face?
That rosy glow on his shapely cheek.
From which box of rouge did the Apple seek?

The Flower-Monarch, clad in robes of regal style-
Where got he the crimson for his smile?
Where trimmed the Tigress, her figure perfect-
His muscles of steel, where did the Panther get?

That plain-shelled oyster, holds within himself, a gem…
The thorny, fruitless Cactus, bears all in her stem!!
Most wondrous aroma, the ugly Incense herb gives
In the heart of dead chaff, the life-giving grain lives!

Was not Amber born of Tree-bark dead,
And the brightest Stone crown the darkest Serpent’s head?
Is not the most venomous, stinging bee
Blessed to give forth the sweetest honey???

What Fancy, what Fashion, what Beauty-
What better, than Nature’s Accessory???!!!
What matter, the Flesh decorated be-
When the Soul-Jewel dull, lies.
Ornament the Self-thou shalt see
It shine in Glory, when It flies!!!
