In the morning of life
I was a shimmering light – Swept
the world off it’s feet,
Never beat a hasty retreat;
Grew on success, dwelled in fame
And married a beautiful dame;
Life was bliss
Then arrived the kids,
We brought them up on a level plane.
‘I had a dream for everyone
Saw them grow with plenty of fun;
Gave them the riches
Saved them of the blushes
From the very harsh outside world.
In the blazing noon of middle age
My vigour was a torn page;
I moved with care,
Saw life with despair
And groomed to walk my stick along.
In the twilight of life
I lost my wife;
Had my dog for company
And had little money.
The weaker were stronger,
And the paupers were richer;
The worst of men, was I.
The horizon dimmed as the sun set
And forever was I laid in peace to rest;
The years of glory came to an end
My life was history in a second;
I have no woes that I have lived so long
Nor that I nowhere now belong;
It is my friends – the circle of life;
We are in it until we die.
