Trees across the road

a poem by Uma Asopa

Shaking hands, or arm in arm
is as far they can go.
The trees on two sides of this road
nod in agreement,
or shake vigorously in disbelief
at the chasm in their class
or color of their leaves.

The roots underground
may reach out to one another
across the gap, and leaves
may rejoice in rustling
like intermingling thoughts,
but the body of their stems
shall stand across this wedge,
ever hungry for a hug
and some more.
