The City Rises

a poem by Puneeth D Kalavase

I walk
into the city
under cover of the dark,
I bask in
sulfur glow
that bathes
my face
and paints it
the color of hell.
I revel in her solitude,
her melancholy,
her glaring existence
so contrasted with mine.

The rain falls
rhythmically on my face,
acidic
it bites
into my skin
as I feel the edge of
a knife
in my side.
I see,
my shadow
crumple and fall
one last closing embrace
as my kiss
touches my lips,
cold and wet,
I feel hands
in my pockets,
as the city takes her fee
for my sojourn in her.
