He was a Greek man,
She was an Indian girl,
He was big and strong,
She had pretty eyes, and lashes that were long.
People looked at him, with respect and fear.
Tales if her beauty were told both far and near.
He had looks of a God,
And was a wealthy lord.
She was a beautiful princess,
The dream of many princes.
When he was invited,
She wasn’t very delighted;
But they danced together at the fair-
A sight which was rare!
They fell in love unexpectedly soon,
And met each day, under the moon.
Like the Ganges their love was pure,
And of their marriage the people were sure.
But the vizier of the Sultanate,
Decided to change their fate.
He was jealous of the prince’s popularity,
So with a show of sincerity,
He said “to get the throne, he needs the princess,
A whip or two will get him back to his senses”.
His men entered the palace to kill the prince,
One of their many, planned, disgusting sins.
But how boldly he defended himself and well!
About his valour no one in words can tell!
All enemies died;
But one survived,
And slained the princess into two!
Leaving the prince alone to woe.
How calmly in her coffin she slept,
Beside her, her love wept.
He cried out “If God will get her carried,
I too with her shall get buried!”
Then occurred a miracle,
One known by no oracle;
Touched her a ray of heavenly light,
I remember it was a moonless night!
She first stirred a bit,
Then she began to sit!
The prince got, for what with God he had fought,
So he now thanked him on the spot.
Love had won again this time,
The wicked were punished for their crime.
True love had brought her back to life,
She was now to be the prince’s wife!
