The Poet by the Sea

a poem by Mary Mathew

Gazing nearby the poet could see
The waves crashing on the rocks,
The haunting music filling his ears
As each wave rose to a never-ending dance.

The shadow of the moonlight beside him
Showing a reflection also on the sea
Which he perceives as a shining light like
An ornament on the luscious garment like hair
That curls in ripples of tresses each moment.

The wind has a certain song of its own tonight
As it thundered with the waves, raging against
The land beyond its reach, trying to get through
Those tumultuous feelings against an unknown foe
Who is none other but the wind himself, yet it knows not.

Seeing all this, the poet began to brood on the conflicts
That was going through him in his chasm like heart,
Sighing deeply over his loss on comprehending the
Deeper meanings in the life around him, he fixed
His eyes on the young lovers that walked arm in arm
Amidst the backdrop of the starlight that is paling
Into an endless darkness and yet they continued with their
Stroll in a reverie unaware of the prying wind overhearing
Their dreams of being together, their laughter drowning
The jealous wind of its loud claps of raging war.

Under the star-studded sky, he lies there waiting,
Hoping for a reply from the horizon beyond
That is showing a sailor adrift on a vessel facing
A vicious attack from the creatures of the sea and
The land alike, riding on the waves to reach the shore.
Something about the way the sailor was braving
Against every danger in the sea made the poet implore
To the Almighty for his safety return to the coast.

The mysterious sea seems to have unlocked a secret
That the poet was searching all his life- a prayer,
A poem on eternal beauty and everlasting truth,
Something of the sea he longs for but can’t touch
But can be felt deep in the recesses of his heart.
He hears the song within himself, and turning
Silently, walked away with a lesson he learnt
For one lifetime, leaving behind only his footprints.
