Dancing in the Terrace

a poem by Mary Mathew

Deep within my soul, a secret song begins,
As the lingering lips wish upon the roving winds
To converse mysteriously on the essence of my life,
With her, the angel who dances in the nearby terrace.

From the moment of that first glimpse of the abode,
I felt the loneliness, the untold sadness dwelling
Within, overpowering my senses, my feelings-
The beginning of an unusual, fatal attraction.

Time descends with her, in each gliding step,
Like the grains of the sand in the hourglass.
Slowly, gently, gracefully, were her moves
Designed in a divine cosmic pattern, plunging
Into the depths of immortal dance of the apsaras.

Was it the glacial air that took my breath away?
Or was it the firefly dance in my fiery heart
That drew me to her in the flickering starlit night?
Her unearthly dance finds a voice in me, her only audience.
The unheard song merges with the disregarded dance,
The union of music and dance in a heavenly aisle.

Waking my unconscious mind, her yielding steps
Deepens into my soul, levitating my unconscious body
To unknown earthly heights, liberating hidden dreams
Immersed royally in purple waves of the night’s rays,
Rousing my emotions, my desires to an endless pulsation.

Her Dionysian eyes pour temptation as its expression
Seeking timelessly to capture happiness as a captive
To fulfill her needs, shredding the veil of her isolation.
She flowed rhythmically, swirling like a steady wave,
Uniting with the frozen undercurrents of my deadened vein.

Her anklets tiptoe into the deep recesses of my mind,
Echoing the longing to be one with her, wishing no more
To be apart, to sever the chains of the cosmic law
Separating us from being together, the distance evermore
Like the earth standing apart from the purgatory.

As my shadow retreats and looms before her,
In a dance of its own, embracing her as a dark secret
In its shade, her life is betrothed to me, my wraithlike death
Wedded to her once, the dance complete in the terrace.
Hand in hand, we submit ourselves to the eternal trance.
