The cry in the night

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Awoke, the child in the broom cupboard cried!
Neglected for years now
it could not longer be ignored!
Unnamed, an abortion left behind in Japan,
blood on a white sheet.
Heartbroken, its mother had expected a healthy love child!
and the ship sailed without her.
There, there my mysterious child cry no more,
I know that you miss your mother, so do I.
The ship sailed, as ships must,
and never returned.
I have an image of you in my heart
and the sun rises over Yokohama every day
just for you my unlived child.
