Mother

a poem by Sumita Jagannathan

From early times, memories awash
I remember your sweet smile
Those hands that held mine
safe and protected, along life’s mile

Little fingers wrapped in yours
stumbling steps and baby howls
you made me walk and made me laugh
and gave me affection from love’s bowl

A wish, I made, to be a friend
You spoke with me and often said
“My darling I love you so”
filled lovely thoughts in my head

The years add on, a tad too fast
but the love and smile still remain
Mother, dear, what happiness you bring
You give me joy and take my pain

Now the time is flying by
I’m here and there and everywhere
new faces I see, people I meet
some friendly, some who scare
