Responding to the Breath

a poem by Christuraj Alex

Breath permeates us as it does with all creatures,
Enters in us! Play us like musical features!
Touch every nerve and bone and cells and flesh, and blood
Opens up each block and barricade and sense-bud…

As the environment, with wealth and filth, blemished,
And externals, like royal weddings, embellished;
Hearts are gutters; minds are sewages; What’s, then, left?
We live like beggars, having cozy mansions built.

To our homes have we become eternal strangers,
How come our homes said to become Jesus-mangers?
No sheep; no shepherds; no angels sing Gloria,
Who thinks of Jesus? Santa is our mania.

Breathing is martyrdom! Pollution everywhere!
We’ve not been breathing for many a happy year;
Need to go to the Himalayas? Meet a sage?
They say they live long content for many an age.

Content? Can they dare to come to our best city?
I know, a slum-dweller will feel for him pity;
The reason for this is tranquil and so simple,
Our saints cannot breathe polluted air. It’s rumble!

Can we be humble? Happy! Face realities!
Can we start realizing our real frailties?
While feeling, eating, drinking all that’s is so good,
Could we breathe the best of the air breath that we should?

It’s there in us, with us, for us, all around us,
Like the Spirit of God, it surrounds with no fuss;
It’s been given us from the beginning of times,
It’s been handed over to us, with life’s enzymes.

Let’s take time now to utilize the best of it,
What’s breathed in us is the gift of the Spirit. Fit!
Now it’s on us to be like Judas or Jesus,
Or like Peter, cries over spilled milk – who sees us?

What an engulfing like the inferno and smoke,
What empowering and overpowering stroke!
What such taking over by the life-giving breath!
What peace! Tranquility! Awesomely saving meth!

Let’s, then, bid the breeze Good morning and evening kiss!
Let’s, don’t to each creature a tight flying kiss miss!
Souls in the form of clouds lay all-around blue sky,
Don’t we have the duty to bid them great goodbye?

Let the breath we are breathed find new heaven and earth,
Where empowerment of hearts and mind find new birth!
Breath that initiated His works on this earth,
May find the true conclusion in each finite breath!
