Fire

a poem by Rajiv

As the team lay in the depths of despair
In the dark, a billion had a prayer to share;
Then he came, as the glimmer of hope
His eyes burning like a golden flare

Out in the middle, he stood with a single goal
Nothing less than a win could slake his flaming soul
And then he erupted – his willow blazing away
As the raging inferno engulfed the stadium whole

On smashing a six or belting a four
We fancy ourselves to be the hero we so dearly adore
Like the Sun he is; the ultimate force
Bestowing us with energy from his infinite store

When many fell, for the love of money dire
And dragged the game into its worst quagmire
He stood tall, towering above the rest
Untainted by evil, as chaste as fire
