To My Parents

a poem by Sankhajit Bhattacharjee

I
As a rain-bathed crow seeks for a dry shelter,
as a thirsty camel walking on the dry hot desert seeks for an oasis,
as a black serpent, taking shape of a coil seeks for warmth of life in a cold wintry night
I seek you two forever.

You have given
this slit-throat cuckoo a voice of singing,
this dying tree his blossom,
this dried river his rhythmic water flow
and this infertile sand his ability to produce crops.

You have molded my childhood.
You are the law givers of my adulthood
and the inspirations of my youth.
You will be the providers of stability of my mid-age
and the God and Goddess of this old pilgrim.

As the sky protects this earth,
you act like umbrellas to rescue me from heat, cold and rain of my life.

I am in debt to you,
the amount of which is more than millions of universes:
even the Almighty will show the back to pay it-
each and every life has this debt.

As the civilians pay regards with folded knees to a martyr
I am hereby offering you my infinite hearty respect.

II
I have witnessed a soldier,
who fought, is fighting and will fight
with all his might, power, strength and vigor
to overcome all hindrances
with a smiling face
for winning the eternal war of life.
The scorching heat, torrential downpour and bitter cold
can hardly stop him from his struggle.
He is my father,
who never showed his back.
Whenever I am in utter distress his image determines me
to fight on and on, not to give up,
to be a born soldier, to remain as a soldier and to die like a soldier.
If I win my life struggle, it will be for him,
not due to the blessings of God.

Slowly and steadily I grew up in your womb-
your blood circulated in my veins:
it supplied nectar and washed away wastes.
I drew nourishment from your body-
the beat and rhythm of my life coincided with your:
then you perturbed me.
I saw the sun, moon and stars.
You reared me up with your kind hands,
fed me with breast milk, bathed and cleaned me, lulled me to sleep…
I learned the use of my hands, legs, senses, intellect and heart because of you.
I’m your manifestation.
My greatest creator, greater than any Goddess,
bless your one and only creation to flourish in his life.

You two take the regard of my heart, respect of my mind,
esteem of my senses and honor of my body.

III
My nearest and dearest, my parents-
the two sounds of my heart beat-
I always wish to share my happiness with you
to make you smile
and my grief too
to reduce my burden-
as a sunflower and bee share their life and living-
an eternal friendship.

I can never keep this relation for infinite times
as human are mortal.
But I wish to share for long.
I pray to the Almighty for your long life.
I fear if both or any one is short lived
how will I remain alive?

IV
This ship has two captains, the parents.
The ship is progressing through
an unknown, vast and deep ocean of life.
Behind his every movement
there are blessings and inspirations of the captains.
Their happiness and peace lie in his progress.
They have trained him-
how to get rescued from fierce storms,
how to avoid collisions with icebergs,
how to prevent an overturn…
He realizes that in the absence of any one or both
he will get drowned forever
and nobody can ever locate his trace,
even the almighty will fail eternally to save him!
