Punishment

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

In Hanover street (Liverpool)
I collapsed, rushed to the nearest
Hospital and pumped.
He nurse who attended me, was
Later that night arrested for
Drunken driving.
An intern stole my cowboy boots,
Bought in Texas, the year before.
Shoeless I took the number 47 home.
And needless to say it rained.
My wife sat in her usual chair glaring
At the TV set, while smoking
Silk Cut to the filter burnt.
She didn’t speak to me for seven days,
A severe punishment for her, as she is
One of life’s great gabbers.
