Fortunes of War

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Father was a nazi, he believed that the Nordic race
was the natural rulers of this world.
Sent to the Eastern front
and respectably wounded
by flying metal.
Back in Norway
he became a recruiting officer,
tried to get the gullible and stupid
to join up.
When peace broke out
he was tried as a traitor
and sent to prison for a while.
Then the cold war broke out
and he was seen as
a hero who had fought the communists.
Polished his medals,
modified his opinions
and became a defender of his country.
When he died,
people said
that he was a man ahead of his time,
if a little misguided.
He was an odious man
who beat his wife
and had his children
doing Nazi salute at home.
His true character is forgotten
by those who still put flowers on his grave.
