Dowry

a poem by Shyam Bhaya

Placing your son on a bidding block
From his birth starting the clock
Is he a commodity you should price
Getting a bride, shouldn’t that suffice

Your greed has no boundary
Poor parents of girl in a quandary
Demands of money and gifts outrageous
This social evil very contagious

Punishment meted out if unfulfilled
Harassed, persecuted or killed
Would you do it to own daughter
Stand by quietly at her slaughter

Leaving parent’s home, eyes in tears
Struggling inside, facing her fears
Daughter-in-law is family’s pride
Not against but be on her side
