My wish for America

a poem by Mary Mathew

If any one of my wishes is blessed
To come true, I wish now for America’s
Peace and security in this hour of need,
Strength and support from nations wide.

I wish that their laughter be restored.
Then I would ask for peaceful rest
To reside with them in their darkness
Of gloom, despondency and dimness.

I am praying that the dawn of hope
Is nearing at these moments of loss.
A dawn for their depressed lives-
Giving them back their lost honour
And glory of their forefather’s efforts
That were all reduced to mere ashes.

I ask for nothing, My Lord, except
To bestow my fellow-beings with what
They had lost, to bring solace in their
Lives, to make them realise people care.
As long as humanity is here, and people
Are humane, so long will there be the miracle
Of support, even in the face of stiff opposition.

My Lord, aren’t You seeing the misfortune
That has befallen on the so-called superpower?
My lord, show us that You are the powerful one.
Change the fate of this country to a fine weather.
Grant them the contentment, the dignity and the pride
That they have lost; return the joy to their hearts.

My Lord, if I could have one wish to come true,
Then it would be for this great nation to rise
From the ashes that they have been reduced to-
To one with a fighting-spirit, like the phoenix.
