Dusk to Dawn

a poem by Mabel Annie Chacko

Darkness engulfed the earth
the air filled with intoxicating smell,
the smell of life,
the smell of moist earth,
the sound of thunder broke
the silence of the night.
Inspite of the night being stormy,
a soft tune reached my ears,
but after a few minutes,
I got lost in thin air,
Leaving a strong but mixed feeling
in my heart.

I felt uneasy,
I felt strange,
I felt like laughing
I felt like crying,
the voice got recharged,
This time, growing louder and
louder,
More and more shrill,
even worse than that of a drill.

It seemed to come nearer and nearer,
And finally,
The source was in front of me.
Just near my candle,
It was then that I discovered
that the shrilly drily song
was that of a rickety cricket…
trying to pass its time,
from Dusk to Dawn.
