The monument of thy love

a poem by Suboor Usmani

Oh! The monument of thy love!
Enticing, grand, tempting and puerile.
Grains of sand set in a mirage.
Towering facade, an overpowering charade.
So much warmth in its interiors
Yet a foundation so fragile.

Adverse winds always found it wanting.
A casual drift takes a brick out
And the entire structure collapses.
A heavy burden descends on my shoulders
And then I begin again.
Brick by brick I attempt to rebuild the structure.
Like a jigsaw I fit in the pieces.
I rummage through the rubble,
But I don’t find the brick that came out first.
Tangled cobwebs of your deceit mock at me.
The dust of your passion lies scattered.
I discover some stained pieces of glass
They were once part of my heart.
Alas they can’t be joined now without a blemish
The glue of your tears is too weak.
The scars are too deep to be redeemed now.
