Seasons of Life

a poem by Vidhya Jayarama Raja

An air of anxious expectancy
A gift of life
A spring in the step; a dawn –
Everything to look forward to
The pains of growing up come along,
Strict discipline under the watchful eye
Of the summer sun, a morning –
Youth baked by the afternoon sun
Soon mellows into autumn evening
Of caring and preparing
For the generation ahead
Winter soon steps in
With her cold calmness.
In the twilight hours
Of glazed eyes shrivelled skin
And white hair
In the night of death
The seasons of life culminate.
