Mixed Blessings

a poem by Mahendra

Life bestows upon us
Blessings so mixed,
so tiresomely certain,
so unbearably hard,
so unpredictably sure
that we must endure.
Moments of joy
followed by moments of grief,
one chasing the other
through our time so brief.
They come and pass on,
willing us to hang on,
leaving us tired and weary
but ever filling us with hope,
constantly reminding us that pains
always come before any gains.
