My Son, My Friend

a poem by Devika

I have tried to find a name,
A word, a thought,
Something to define
This space which you abide in me-
I wonder if salvation
Be this tenderness
That melts inside
Into a flood of thanksgiving in me-
Is it the solitude
Which speaks of you
In the drum-beat
Of the heart that pulses in me-
Or is it the voice
Of innumerable loves
That have whispered
Into the air that breathes in me-
Why do I stop in awe
Of the grandeur
That surrounds us,
When thoughts of you arise in me-
What are you, my gentle one,
Who have stepped out
From between the pages
Of dreams that died undreamt in me-
Where did you live
During the lost years,
That silently dropped
Off the leaves of life in me-
Somewhere in Infinity
I found you, my friend,
Walking the corridors
Of unspoilt memories left in me-
