The Idolatry

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

I met and fell in love with you,
in the early days of spring
when grass is truly green
and cynics believe in love.

Loved you a long summer
that suddenly cooled to
years when leaves begin
to fall off poplar trees.

I still love you now, that
my days are fading light
a winter afternoon before
snow shrouds the ground.

In other women’s eyes and
passionate embraces I met
you time and time again;
faithful I’ve been to you.
