The Evil of Dowry

a poem by Mabel Annie Chacko

Dowry! Dowry! Dowry!
Is the epitome of everybody’s worry.
The very birth of a girl child,
Leads to a state of shock,
Not for the parents alone,
But for the grandparents alike.

Why this evil system continues…
Is a question ever remains unanswered…
In everybody’s tongue.
One has to think and think
To find a solution to this
Very undisputable system.

The ancient system of “Gaodaan”
Has now become a Godown
Just for storing precious diamonds and pearls,
To satisfy the avarice of in-laws’.
The system which was a sign of affluence
Among the Kings and rich Landlords,
Now turned out to be the funeral pyre
For many innocent girls.

Let us resolve ourselves-
And sing with one accord,
That we, the brave daughters of today,
Will fight this system with all our might;
To pave the way for a bright and cheerful future,
For our sisters and daughters,
Who are the wombs to bear
Brave and valiant men
To protect our Motherland.
