A Promise of Forgiveness

a poem by Elaine E. Howie

I wrapped my arms around my body and cried
I had been betrayed and yes you had lied
I truly believed you were sincere
I wanted to keep you near

I looked in your eyes as you said you were sorry
And I said I know I will forgive him tomorrow
But as the night dealt me a new blow
I knew that a promise of forgiveness did show

I talked about how we were in love
How you had descended from above
I looked in your eyes
And saw in your soul more lies

So I said to myself should I forgive him
Would that make me know better than them?
Oh but he was my lover, and my friend
But a promise of forgiveness will have to come in
The End
