Late Night Visitor

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Near the bedroom window
where the floorboards are damp and rotten
a rat had gnawed a hole,
and now as it was time for me to sleep
it sat on the blanket on my bed
and eyed me friendly
like it knew all about me.
It struck me
that the sexy dreams I had been having lately
was caused by the rat playfully nibbling my lips.
Chased the rat back down its hole,
she, I hope it was a female,
looked hurt, plugged the hole,
but I didn’t sleep well
kept waking up
thinking it was still there.
