I find it everywhere

a poem by Suman Singh

I walk the lanes and bylanes
and I find it everywhere
in villages, towns and cities,
wherever I go I see it growing.
Somewhere sprout, somewhere plant
and somewhere tall gigantic tree.

Every road, every street leads me
to where crowds have collected
under its wings to listen rapt
to its sermons. High born, low born,
well paid, low paid are all
encompassed in its mighty folds.

Surging ahead it roams the land
with triumphant strides. The hordes
follow in its footsteps weak
with greed and avarice they
find strength in its power
and succumb easily to its tenets.

In the land of the Buddha, Mahavira
Gurunanak and Shankracharya
I watch a new religion make
inroads and spread to every
nook and cranny. And the new
mantra of money! money! money!
is chanted everywhere from the
temples of the godhead corruption
who rules unrivaled from the
ruins of the conscience and the
land resounds with the echoes of
voices repeating money! money! money!
