Cyber-Friendship

a poem by Mary Mathew

My friend, isn’t it extraordinary that
We met in a place called the Internet
Where everything is virtual, mysterious,
Devoid of feelings, nothing but numbness?

You needn’t utter a word, yet with the press of
A button- Enter, a message is sent to me
And your voice is unmistakably heard
Though no sound reached my ear.
You touch me with hands that is unseen
For I sense the caressing of it upon the wind.
The nights I chat with you, brings into my life
A light into the darkness and gloom I kept for myself.
You are the warmth in the cold, wintry season.
I have never been blessed to see your countenance
Yet I can visualize the contours of your face.

My friend, when I am in contact with you
I feel as if God’s voice is silently speaking
In the depths of my abyss-like heart.
The gentle bond of friendship that we share,
I pray to God, be not wrecked by falsehood
That is so omni-present in the cyber-world.
