The Lost Island of Dreams

a poem by Sudarshan Madhav Karhale

Sitting at the sandy shore
of a deserted beach,
I try to look for the lost island
out of my sight,
out of my reach.

I cannot pay for
a navigation boat to sail;
I do not wish to dive
in the deep waters
with deadly sharks at bail.

A narrow path paves through
the wooden forests up the gentle slope;
infested heavily with
small packs of sneaky wolves,
hunting down ravagingly
a large thorny antelope.

I have no formidable weapon
to protect the poor thing suffering;
I stood there,
staring at it helplessly,
without a single word uttering.

The bright sun unnoticed yet,
hidden behind the dark clouds,
slowly began to descend down,
along with my dying hope;
I brought myself close
to a lit cosy bonfire,
thinking about
the devastating catastrophe.
