Broken Dreams

a poem by Tanushree Nair

I had a dream when
I was asleep
and as I woke up
my dream was shattered to pieces
and now when I am awake
the broken pieces poke my eyes
and I am reduced to tears.

I had a destination that
was so far away
that the sun-set on my way there
the stars were enough to guide me through
until the smoke from the chimney
covered my only light left
and I saw my destination fade away…

I once had a fire in me
that would never die
and there came this downpour
and my enthusiasm
flowed down to a trickle.
I know I shouldn’t lose hope
but what is hope after all
a mere source of comfort.
I long crossed that crossroad where
hope was on sale
on that tiny little pathway
to reach where I had to
pay all my belongings and
so when I got there
I had nothing left to
buy hope with…

And then god showed me the light
he told me to go on
inspite of everything
and so here I am.
I don’t know where I’m going
but I’m on my way…
And so again did I
come to this beautiful sunrise of life
and hope and dreams…
