Desire

a poem by Smita Toppo

Desire of a day
when I’ll wake up
to children’s laughter
and know they’ll
not slave
at a quarry
or, bear the heat
of a dark dingy factory.

Desire of a day
when old grandma
won’t have to sell incense
for her meal of the day.

Desire of a day
when I won’t see
a dog and a human
grabbing for the same spread
that’s thrown away.

Desire of a day
when no one will cry
of hunger, sickness and misery.

Desire of a day
when men will live as men
and not barely exist
living life to the fullest
the way God meant it to be.

Tell me,
do I desire too much?
