The English Way!

a poem by Shubha Garimella

I say, my friend,
English is a funny language
There are rules to follow
And rules to bend.

I saw a mouse in my house
Or did I see mice in my hise?

My foot is sore and my feet ache,
Get my boot mended or buy new beet?

One deer is grazing and so are three deer,
Five sheep, four cow and three cat, I fear.

You say you saw two oxen,
But say two boxes not boxen!

They say, just ad ’s’ or ‘es’,
Drop ‘y’ and add ‘ies’.

But nothing’s so easy, my dear,
It’s exceptions to the rule, I fear!
